Is it possible to network 2 pc's together in the same room using only the lan cards and the cable?I always thought ya had to have a hub or switch. Both pc's are running 98SE.
Thanx again :)

The cable must be a crossover cable which is a special type of CAT5 Ethernet. From experience however, it can be a real pain trying to get it to work, especially if you have two different OS's. You have to play around with the WINS/DNS settings for the TCP/IP protocol until you get them to see each other. Usually, just setting different IP addresses and computer names does the trick. Often times, it requires a bit more.

Don't let that scare ya, though. They're fairly cheap, so it won't hurt to try before investing in a hub or switch.

I have never had any problems directly related to crossover cables and have used them many times. Where I have seen problems with simple peer to peer networks it has almost invariably been NIC driver or hardware issues or an error in configuration. I once spent hours trying to get a network going before I discovered I had entered 255.255.256.0 as the subnet mask on one system [blush] Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Howdy:

If you are only concerned with networking the two systems, simply make sure the Netbeui protocol is installed in both and you have a file or folder shared.
