Hi together,

we go to implement an Cellera NS42g to our SAN and Networker (7.5.1) environment.

The data amount that is planned to be backuped from the Cellera is about 6-10 TB and 10-15Million of Files.

Normally i would say that we configure the Cellera to write an NDMP Datastream via FC to the EDM 710 but then i found out that when i like to clone the Data, that the datastream has to go again over the cellera because of the Tape format??
(picture on the left)

When i do the NDMP Backup over the DSA Agent and LAN instead of SAN, then i can do the cloneing with the Networker Server and must not do it over the cellera but which impact to the performance will this have ?
(picture in the middle)

(ill expect over the LAN a maximum of 60mb/sec instead of 80-100MB/sec over FC (2Gig)..pls correct me if iam wrong)

A third option would be the Module "Tape Server" of Networker but i cant find any further information if this is still supported with 7.5.x and up...and if this works with the Cellera so that the Networker Server would be ab able to understand the special Cellera NDMP Tape Format.
(picture on the right)

I created a "quick draw" of the 3 solutions...any other good ideas to backup a Cellera high performant with Networker to e EMC EDL 710 and clone it to a Adic with LTO-3 Drives afterwards ?

RED = Backup Datastream way
BLUE = Clone Datastream way

Networker Server is a SUN V490 Server (SOL 10) with 4 Emulex LP10000 Ports

To the best of my knowledge Tape Server is still supported. It is nothing else but a remote NMDP Tape Server, though also a networked solution.

BTW - the is no Celerra NDMP tape format as NDMP is independent of the NAS manufacturer.

If the parameters fit, i recomment DSA - it is the easiest way (and it does not cost a penny).

@605 thx..thats also my favorit solution at the moment...the only doub i have with that is the maybe reduced performance...but we will see..implementation is planned end of July..ill keep you updated.

Btw..thx for the NDMP Tape format hint..that was my information till yesterday also but EMC said something different...which must not be correct as always ;-)

If your celerra has two "heads" (controllers) you can try to save some filesystems via controller 1 and the other via controller 2. You only need one ndmp license for this because is the same ndmp array.
Therefor you craeate two ndmp clients with the same ndmp array name, in the second client's "server network interface" attribute use a different nic of your networker server if possible. So you can expect an agregated bandwidth of 120 MB/sec wich on the sam range as your 2 GB FC bandwidth.
If your backbone does not provide this bandwidth you can add an additional backup lan.

A Cellera NS4x has 2 "Datamovers" but only one is active the other one is passive for standby.
Only NS8 Series can have up to 8 Datamovers where 7 can be active.

So in our case we have to live with one active Datamover
