Hello all,
Networker Version 6.1.2 Build 340
I have an SGI Octane with Irix 6.5 with the Networker Client software loaded. A Sun Solaris 2.6 box is the master. In addition I have these clients: an SGI O2 with Irix 6.3, a Sun Ultra 60 and Blade 1000 with Solaris 2.7. All the clients, EXCEPT, the Octane will work. When I try and start nwrecover it responds with:

nwrecover: Cannot contact nsrexecd service on santana, Service not available.
nwrecover: Cannot start session with server hummer: Authentication error

The 6.3 box has two nsrexecd processes that start, but the Irix 6.5 will only start one.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the client software. The nslookup and reverse lookup work, NIS identifies the client properly, I can ping the master from the client, and the client from the master. I have put the master name in the servers file in the res dir. From the master savegrp -c santana santana produces:

* santana:/viewstore NetWorker: Cannot contact nsrexecd service on santana, Service not available.
* santana:/viewstore save: RAP error: ClientPaks for UNIX/NSR enabler does not exist in the system
* santana:/viewstore save: Cannot open save session with hummer

I don't understand the ClientPaks part. I have Networker Business Edition with 1 Server and up to 8 clients. Besides the 6.3 box works, why not the Irix 6.5?

Any ideas?

Thanks to all.

The surprise for me is that your 6.5 box worked in the first place, not that the 6.3 didn't. You *should* need a Unix Client Pak Enabler as soon as you back up a client that has a different Unix flavor than your server. Have you tried adding a Unix Client Pak temp enabler to see if you get past that error? nsrlic output give you anything useful? Finally, running nwrecover or savegrp with the -v (or even -D3) option may give you more info, just in case it isn't a plain ol' license issue.

Normally, a NetWorker client will have 2 nsrexecd processes running at the same time. The fact that your Irix 6.5 box doesn't is cause for concern.

I would try to troubleshoot the NetWorker startup script to see if there were problems starting up NetWorker.

Alternatively, you can start NetWorker with nsrexecd -D9 to see what problems will show up.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. It was your tips that lead me to this website PDF file.

It specifically says:
"Authorization codes, which activate additional functionality of NetWorker software and other Legato software, are sold separately. For example, if you want your NetWorker server to back up data from NetWorker clients that use a different operating system than the server, then you need to purchase and implement an authorization code to activate the NetWorker server’s ClientPak functionality."

Kind of a sneaky IMHO.

Thanks again to all.

In addition to the Client Pak, turns out I had to start the SGI rpcbind daemon with the -C option. I am running Irix 6.5.7m. I will try and find out at what level of Irix the -C option would not be needed.

Found it. Irix 6.5.8 is the release that does not need the -C option.

Just to complete the story in this thread. I upgraded to Irix 6.5.9 and removed the -C option from the /etc/config/rpcbind.options file. Networker is now very happy. Two nsrexecd processes are now running on the SGI system and backups are working great.
