I installed a network on 2 computers with Windows XP on the one and 98 on the other. The workgroup is the same, but with a fixed IP-number they don'd 'see' each other. Ping doesn't work (time out, packets get lost). Ping to adapter (127.0.0.1) does work so the hardware is o.k.

What could be the case here?
Why isn't working as it should be?

I used an permanent ip address on the first machine to boot (192.168.0.1-255.255.255.0)which uses WinXP and used dhcp to assign an address to the Win98 machine which is the second to boot. I did also notice a problem connecting the Win98 machine when using a permanent ip address.

My home network is made up of a LinkSys wireless router connected to a DSL modem. My XP machine (a fairly new HP from Best Buy) is directly connected to the router while my Win 98 machine (a new install on an old Win 95 PC) connects via the wireless. Only the TCP/IP protocol is installed. Both PCs get their IP address from the LinkSys router via DHCP. Bottom line - file sharing works just fine. My wife uses both machines for Word so I put her files are on the XP and she has no idea what's going on.
