Hiya,

Any insight into this would be great. A small site I look after cannot see the rest of the network in Net Neighbourhood. From the central site, they cannot ping the host name but at the small site I can ping all the servers but cannot see them in NN. I have changed DNS setting and after reboot all seemed well. After an hour or two the rest of the network disapeared again!? Seems to be a DNS prob somewhere but strange that it comes and goes?

Thanks for any info...

Does the site uses lmhosts or hosts files? What about WINS?
It seems that an IP definition conflict is happening between DNS and any other name resolution that you may have. More than likely is the server that is wrong because when a computer boots, it reads all the PRE defined IPs from the lmhosts and caches them but if WINS is wrong then it may conflict with the computer cache.

lmhosts and host files are located at winnt\system32\drivers\etc of each NT/2000/XP computer and windows dir on the rest of Win OS.

I agree 100% with "globalstrata" ... but just to make sure.

check the cabling of the NICs at the small site.

I come up with such problems where 1 computer could see all but NOT vice versa. After an exausting 2 week search we found out the the RJ-45 connector was a bit longer than expected, thus could not CLICK-IN PLACE with the NIC.

That was the strangest thing anyone of us had seen !!!!
