Hi all.We have a basic class C network sitting behind a firewall. The vast majority of PC's on our LAN have 10/100 Mb NIC's but a few only support the slower speed. The whole network appears to be running at 10 Mb/sec.Can anyone tell me how the speed of the LAN is determined and what i can do to force it to run at the faster speed. We have a couple of hubs which are a bit old now, they are ExpressSwitch Hub's (FHSW-2602A).Despite their age they appear to support the faster speed. Thanks for reading.Hope you can help...

The speed of the LAN is determaned by the slowest link. Now if you are using TRUE switches then your LAN speed would be 100mbs except for the 10mbs devices (Which will slow down anything accessing them). If you think your network is only running 10mbs then I would replace the switched hubs (Which could be 10mbs) With new ones. James Collins

Check out if your switch is running 100Mbps at full duplex.

Configure the 10/100 Mbps NIC fixed at 100 Mbps. You can use this using the NIC's configuration tool (normally comes with the NIC on a cd or floppy).

This will problem shows when a 10/100 NIC is copnnected 10/100 hubs that could not negotiate at 100 then falls at 10 instead.

Yeah, after i used HyperTerminal to get into the switch i discovered that the ports are fixed at 10Mb/sec and can only be configured for half/full duplex. We will probably replace all of them with 3com SuperStacks when budget allows. Thanks for your reply :)
