I am currently testing my Linux (Red Hat 7.2) box for network security and I am looking for a packet sniffer to similar to 'snoop' (ships with Solaris). I downloaded 'dsniff' but when I to run the program. I get the following error message.
[root@froto root]# dsniff
dsniff: error while loading shared libraries: libnids.so.1.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,

That would be because you don't have the libnids (network intrusion detection ) libraries installed. The home page for that seems to be defunct but you can still get a tarball from --> . If you want a rpm this will probably be OK --> ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/freshrpms/guinness/libnids/libnids-1.16-1.i386.rpm

There is also another sniffer you might be interested in -->
Hope this helps

A good sniffer is part of the standard distribution from SuSE (and possible others) called ksnuffle. You can also download a copy from: linux.davecentral.com/projects/ksnuffle/

Good Luck

ethertool is another that ships with RH72 standard... it is pretty decent... not all the bells & wistles, but does the job :) ---
