Hi,

I've setup a network between two computers both using win2k. I go into local network connection 1 and go to properties --> tcp/ip properties.

What configurations should I have setup. e.g should I have netbios enabled. Should I have default gateway setup.

Should LMHOSTS be checked. What DNS settings should I have considering I use AOL dialup.

Any post welcome

Thanks

Chris

Is that dailup shared via windows 2000, or a hardware router? THat will impat what settings are made.

Dialup is done through AOL. I use a program called anologue proxy as the proxy stuff. Ignore the dial up part if you can help me with the other settings I can sort out other stuff later. Is that possible?

Thanks

Chris

Hello,

First of all I think that with 2 computer you have to use a crossed (not a normal flat cable) RG45 network cable.
What my experience concerned w2k do the rest. If you go to Windows explorer/search/computer and you give it the name of the other computer w2k will show it automatically. If this is done you have to share the different hardisk and printers of each computer.

Regards.

I've got the hardware. I've got a hub and two normal cat 5 cable. I need to know the software network settings. The network worked a couple of days ago and now it doesn't.

Ping 127.0.0.1 works from both computers.
ping ownMachineName works from both computers.

Can't ping each other though.

Hub has green lights for both connections.

1. IF the network worked before and suddenly just stopped and there were absolutely NO CHANGES made, the immediate presumption is the nic card. Nic cards are like light bulbs they only blow when you turn the switch on.

If the nic has activity lights on the back plane, check if they're showing activity.

Check and make sure the card is seated right.

Make sure the correct driver is installed.

Check the patch cable connections to the nics and the hub.

Are you using a crossover cable or the uplink switch on the hub ?

If everything seems o'k, unplug one nic and plug the cable from one unit into the other's nic. If this works then it's the hub (either the hub or the power supply).

Make sure the IP addresses are in the same range.
I use 101.101.10.10
101.101.20.20 for servers
make sure the subnet masks for both units are in the same range 255.255.0.0

Make sure they both have EXACTLY the SAME Default Gateway.

Make sure you've got the unit added to the domain or workgroup.

good luck.

Yeah I checked the seating of card before becauseI thought that could be it. Its fine. The lights on the card are showing as well.

I'm using a hub. And both machines using win2kpro.

Instead of me asking for a configuration let me tell everyone what my config is:

Use the following IP is set to:
IP 10.0.0.1
Subnet 255.0.0.0
Default gateway null

Use DNS server:
Preffered Null
Alternate Null

--> advanced.

Interface metric 1

(DNS tab) is set to Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes radio button is true. Nothing else is set.

(WINS tab) No wins
Enable LMHOSTS lookup is true
Enable Netbios over TCP/IP is true

The other computer is the same but with IP 10.0.0.2

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

I don't have much experience networking two w2k pro computers (at most one 2k pro and other win 98 or all win 98), so I hope this helps.

When I configure small networks (peer-to-peer) of 5 computers or less, the first thing to do is confirm that your cable, NIC's and hub are all working properly. You can test the cable with a cable tester; test the NIC's in the Device Manager (make sure there's no yellow exlamation marks); it's harder to test the hub, but if you've got power, the hub is ususally a no-brainer. It works or it doesn't. If these are all working (and it sounds like they are) you can move onto the network configuration.

I usually use the C-Class IP addresses (i.e. 192.168.0.x), with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. With just two comptuters (no domain, no server) you don't want any WINS or DNS (you've got that). Your "LMHOSTS and NETBIOS over TCP/IP" is ok (I think). What you might be lacking is having both computers in the same workgroup. Try putting both your computers in the same workgroup under Network Identification. After that, for win98 (unsure for w2k) you need to enable File and Print Sharing in order to see each other. You don't actually have to share files, but you must enable File and Print Sharing to see each other.

I'm about to network two w2k pro's at home, through the very same setup (minus the dial-up), so I'll watch this thread closely and help more if you need it.

Chris,
In just a two machine network I would setup the machines like this.
Machine1
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0
no gateway
no dns
no wins
Setup the other machine the same way but use
192.168.0.2 for the IP
Also with just two machines you should add Netbeui as a protocal and put the two machines in the same workgroup. After you have them setup this way you should be able to see both machines in My Network Places. If you can't try to ping one machine from the other. If the ping request fail you might have a bad nic. Good Luck

Why do I have to use a class c address?

Also why should I add netbeui. If tcp/ip can manage the internet why don't it suffice for two pc's??

I'm going to follow what you've said but I'd like to know why please.

Thanks

Chris

You don't have to use the C class if you don't want to. You just have to have both machines on the same class. I just gave you an example of what I use because it works. On a small network (2 machines) without a DNS server or a Wins server the netbeui protocal works nice for using UNC names. You don't have to use it. Again this is what I use on small setups. I am just hoping that it works for you. If it does you can play on your own but have a way (my suggestion) to resort back too. Just trying to help you out.
