I'm trying to setup a simple netwok at a company. It has 2 PC's running windows 98 and the server running (windows 2000 server). They are linked with a simple hub. This system was running and they decided to replace the original server that was running windows nt with this new on running (windows 2000 server). The server see's the two pc's when you double click on "my network places". The problem is that I can't ping the two systems from the server nor can i ping the server from the other two machines. In addition the other two machines(running windows 98) under "my network places" don't show the server, but they show each other.
If anyone has any possible solutions it would be much appreciated!!

This sounds like the classic case of either the wrong sub-net mask or you have not given the PC's all the same workgroup / domain name.

Lets start with the latter.
Workgroup name can be any name you want as in the following

inhouse.com or inhouse

this is combined with the names of the PC's like this

server.inhouse.com or server.inhouse

So, make sure all three PC's have their own name and that the workgroup / domain matches (example below)

server.inhouse.com (192.168.0.1)
slave1.inhouse.com (192.168.0.2)
slave2.inhouse.com (192.168.0.3)

Next we have the sub-mask, make sure that this is the same on all PC's (255.255.255.0)

IP's
These are the IP's of each PC which is linked the the name of the PC, if your using DHCP this will cause a headache, best give each PC a static IP as show above.

Next you will need to configure the servers DNS for all the PC's inhouse, these are the host names for each PC and the IP that these machines use. The example here is the first name (server, slave1, slave2 << Host names in the DNS server). If you need more details on this I'm sure someone will be glad to help out.
The other thing that needs to be done after this is the DNS server entries in the TCP/IP settings on each PC, this must point to the servers IP (192.168.0.1). If the three PC's also have internet access via DSL / Cable with a Router inline they will need to use the internal DNS server (Win2K Server) to do the resolving as long as rooting is set on this server.

More details on this here >>
Hope this helps you.

I didn't see anywhere a mention of IP so you are not using ip.
Put everyone in same workgroup and share the directory with full access.
