I have a subset of endpoints dispersed that connect in via VPN. This IP subnet points to a region where Intra/Inter region IP-IP direct audio is set to 'n' , but IP audio Hairpinning is set to 'y'. I've read what these fields mean, but I'm a bit confused with direct audio and audio hairpinning. Is there something easier to understand this with? And is a NR with these settings common?

Get rid of Hairpinning. The intent was to wrap the call through the DSP without hitting the TDM bus but it has caused too many issues. As far as direct audio it should normally be set to yes unless you have a network region/subnet which does not have direct access to other subnets across the enterprise (typically see this on VPN). Direct audio allows you to connect the RTP stream directly between the two endpoints and can reduce you DSP utilization. Signalling of course still passes through CM. When making these type of changes make sure to monitor your DSP utilization an blockage. Blockage of DSP may show as an ISDN event (I believe 1196 but don't hold me to it) when you have ISDN trunks and calls need to leave the gateway/cabinet to connect somewhere else.
