I have a home network setup with 3 computers 1 is running windows 2k the others are running windows 98 se. The problem is that The windows 2k computer can see and access all files on the windows 98 computers but when I try to access the files on the windows 2k computer I`m asked for a password,Which I never set any drives up with one. Any suggestions??

the win9x systems must access with a valid win2k user ...
so setup ms login users on win9x
create the users for the systems on the win2k machine
and use those to login frmo the win9x systems

What??? you have lost me is there poss. a website whit this information?

seadooman,

irzyxel's post is correct - just try putting it another way.

On the 2k machine, set up 2 new user accounts. Give one of them the same user name and password as you use to log onto first 98 machine, and give the other the same user name and password as you use to log onto second 98 machine.

Obviously if you use same logon for both 98 machines you just need one new user account on the 2k machine.

Once you have done this, you should be able to access shared resources on the 2k machine.

OK Makes sense but on all the computers including the 1 with win 2k I don`t have them set up to use passwords to boot.??

Then just set up the users in 2k with no password.

With the 2k PC do you use the admin acount with no password to logon, or does it just go straight through?

I have 1 name w/ administrator abiltys, but no password. It just goes right through. If that answers the ?.

seadooman,

Are you sorted now (setting up users with no passwords on 2k machine)? Or is there still a problem?

Maybe I should start over..I`m logged on as the administrator w/password for log-on,I go to my son`s computer which is running windows 98se and try to access the harddrives on the win2k machine and it asks for for a network password, what do I need to do,i`ve used the password for log-on and that does`nt work.If you can, give me detailed intructions for setting this up correctly.

Your win98 are probably logged with usernames you aren't aware of, and they auto-logon so you don't have the password dialog box...

Do a Start-Disconnect then you'll see the username that win98 use... then enter it as a user on your win2000 machine and that will do it.

Otherwise I think you could see it doing a NET CONFIG from a dos prompt.

To make it easy on yourself, simply allow anonymous logons to the win2k box, then any win9x client can access that share, no matter what ID is logged on with. ________
Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

seadooman,

jasen means enable the Guest user on your 2k machine.

Wolluf,
Thank you very much, your last post hit the nail on the head.

thanx

Just make sure that win2k machine isn't directly on the internet ! (has to be behind a router) since your security is now at level_0.
