Hi, I have a PC with XP and a PC with 98 on. The network cards on both pc's are working fine. The problem is the Two will not talk to eath other (they did at one stage) When I go into local network (pc with XP on)it shows only shared files on that pc. When I turn on the PC with Win98 on, the network password box pops up, when I go into the network neighborhood (win98)it's empty and now when I power down the PC (win98) it hangs for about for about a minute and then the windows is shutting down screen appears and stays on for about 3-4 minutes before switching off. When I turn the PC with XP on and the desktop appears it hangs for about 2 minutes, the norton icon has a red cross on it then after 2 minutes the cross goes and the network connection icon appears. Neither of these PC's were like this till I used the network windows wizard. Any Ideas ?

Do you have norton's firewall enabled on them?

Are you perhaps running netbeui on the 98 box. if so install netbeui on the xp box. I had this same issue on a small office network where all machines were 98 except one new addition, with xp. It resolved my issue until we upgraded all systems with a win2k server and xp on all workstations. Now we're using tcp/ip without a problem.

Concerning the win98 PC shutdown delay. Instead of shutting down with Start, Shutdown, try Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select that shutdown. I just starting having the same problem and this 2nd method allows it to shutdown immediately. Of course both methods of shutdown should work, so you, like me will need to find a solution to that problem.

dsjoker,
I'm relatively new to XP, but thought that XP didn't support netbui???

Thanks all, Ive used the restore on win 98 and then reinstalled the network card and at the moment it seems to be running okay.
