I have my Phaser 740 connected to my network and yesterday I started having trouble communicating with the printer.

The network settings and IP address are set from the printer's front panel.

Today I started getting errors like this: "A TCP/IP connection could not be created. The printer may be off line, malfunctioning, or busy. Please verify that you have provided the correct TCP/IP address for the printer, and resubmit the print job."

I get similar errors from network computers running Win 98, Win XP and Mac OSX.

I tried pinging the printer's IP address and my network doesn't see the printer (100% packet loss). I've tried connecting to the printer from a Web browser and could not connect.

I checked the printer's network settings and they are all the same as before and accurate. I can see from my network hub that the printer is recognized by the hub and that there is some activity. I don't normally pay a lot of attention to my hub but there does seem to be a very high collision rate with the printer -- this may or may not have been the case before I started having trouble. Could something be interfering with the printer?

I've tried restarting the printer and all the computers on the network several times and it hasn't helped. The printer status page prints fine with every printer restart.

If you can shed any light on this please do, I am baffled!

Thanks in advance!

If you have any extra ports left on a the hub I would try switching the port that your using to see if the port is having problems.

Are you using a static ip addresses, if not, I would set each computer and printer in the office to their own address. Problems that I have seen with DHCP is that TCPIP resets if there was a power outage and the router/hub changes the addresses on you.

Collisions can occur when DNS or gateway address don't match. I would recheck each machines settings to make sure everything matches execpt the IP addresses.

As it turns out power cycling the hub fixed the problem.

For posterity's sake, if anyone should have this problem in the future and come across this thread in a search...

I did try different ports with the same result and I did have statis IP addresses for everything on the network.

It is strange that the hub was having problems with the printer (and the printer only) regardless of which port it was on -- it wouldn't even let me ping the printer.
