Have a desktop with 98se and a laptop with XP pro. Both computers have the same workgroup name and both have different computer names. I am using a Nic with crossover cable. I can see both computers on both computers and can access the desktop from the laptop, but when I try to access the laptop from the desktop in network neighbor’s icon (laptop) I get a prompt saying:

You must supply a password to make this connection.

Resource: \\LAPTOP\IPC$
Password: _____________________________

Save this password in your password list.

How can I change this so as I don’t have to supply a password, or were do I find this password? I have entered every thinkable password but say wrong password.
What I need to know (exactly) how to set this up so I can share files from the laptop to the desktop? I can share one way and although that is OK. Of course I would like to have both machines share each way. How and where do I find the password that it is looking for? Since I know of no password that I setup. I am not very computer literate so be gentle.

On the XP machine check for old entries in the stored password cache:

. Logon as Administrator
. Start, Run, control userpasswords2

Click "Advanced", then "Manage Passwords"
Remove any entries related to your Win98 machine.

bcastner, I did as you said.
. Logon as Administrator
. Start, Run, control userpasswords2

Click "Advanced", then "Manage Passwords"
Remove any entries related to your Win98 machine.

All that is there is my email address (passport). I looked at Users and found that there is

User Name Group
Administrator Administrator
Guest Guest
My name Administrator

Does this mean that there is two Administrator groups and causing a conflict?

No, that all looks normal. In XP there will always be an "Administrator", and there are likely other usernames as members of the Group Administrator.

On the XP go to Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View and scroll until nearly the bottom and uncheck 'Use simple file sharing - recommended.'

Then Control Panel, User Accounts, and enable the Guest account.

Reboot and test again.

bcastner:
Thank you very very much, that did it!! I had to create a home network in guest and when I did it show it was password protected and I was able to turn off the password protection. Bam, I clicked on the laptop Icon on my desktop and every shared file opened.

Again, Thank you!!

If you understand that some cannot understand and you work towards those ends, most everyone will come to understand!!
