I have a batch file that maps network drives and loads network printers to workstations when the user loges on. Worked perfectly with XP and works most of the time with Windows 7 but once in a while and randomly, printers will not load, getting a “cannot connec t to the printer, check the server or the print spooler on the server etc, etc. However the network drives are mapped.

For what I can tell, it appears that if the workstation is waiting for a Windows Update to be installed, the printers do not install. Anyone having the same issue or a solution?

thanks

Sounds similar to an issue we have when trying to install a self packaged 'service pack' on our custom XP build... we have to kill off the wsus process in order for our msi to run. Our msi obviously relies on msiexec to run but this is already running at startup due to it being used by the update process.
We use a VB script to kick off our service pack installation and this script contains the relevant command to shutdown the update process and msiexec prior to kicking off our install.

I can post the relevant section of code if that helps? I'm no VB scripter though so you'll have to make of it what you will.

I'm not sure if that helps in anyway? Apologies if it only makes sense to me [wink]

I added a net stop WSUS before the printer install command and a net start WSUS after the last printer install command on the batch file, it looks like it worked this morning.... to be continued...

cool... fingers crossed that's done the trick then [smile]
thanks for keeping this updated, nothing worse than not knowing if someone has found a fix or not...plus it helps others reading too [smile]

I will put another post in a week or so, when i know for sure if it works or not.

well, no luck, however, I found out that removing the printers manually and using MMC to remove all the drivers, fixes the problem.

The weird thing is that a system will load the printers no problem for weeks and all of the sudden it stops… no idea what causes it…..
