Newly installed 15 Workstation Elementary school Win2000Server Network needs a printer for record keeping and minor report printing....My cousin (a network admin for a large township school district) recommended HP 4000 series printer but I think its too much for their needs...Can anyone recommend something under 600.00usd...Thanks

See if you can find a refurbished HP III or 4 model. Ebay always has some for sale and lot already have a JetDirect installed. Whatever route you decide, I strongly suggest keeping it a laser printer, not an ink jet. (Only because of print and ink quality.)

Really depends on the volumn you will be printing. You could step down to the HP 2200.

The HP 2200 might be a good choice if you want to stick with HP. You could also look at refurbished HP printers (
I like Samsungs printers. They are lower cost than HP and seem to be very nice printers.

You could pick up 2 lower end models for $600 if you are willing to attach directly to a PC and share them.
This would give you a spare printer and might allow easier access to a printer if folks are spread out much.

I forgot to add. We have serveral of the HP 4000 series printers. They are very good reliable printers. Aside from the cost and size, you should be very happy with one.

My personal opinion...once a Samsung breaks down we use them for door stops. Parts availability and costs become prohibitive.[thumbsdown]

My organization has decided to stick with HP which I feel is a wise decision. HP has always come through for us in the event of a printer failure. Recently, one of our HP 2200dn printers died (still under warranty). HP had a replacement sent to us in less than 24 hours. In these days when customer service is sacrificed in the interest of fiscal downsizing, I was impressed. Stick with HP if you want great service.

I run a number of HP's from the 4200 series down to deskjets.

I really like the laserjet 1300N, it is about $560

Don't forget, there are 15 work stations...I don't think the 1300 is a viable printer for that kind of use.

HP 1300n great little printer with workload of up to 10000 pages/month.
