Network Printer IP Changes On Its Own

Hello All..

I have a Win2K Active Directory Network with Win2K and XP clients. on my domain. I have several printers connected to my network.

On particular device (Minolta D series copier/scanner) has a fixed IP of 192.168.1.17 on the first floor of my building and 192.168.1.29 for the exact same model on the second floor.

One of my users has the first floor Minolta loaded on his machine. However, periodically, the IP address changes on its own and he ends up printing to the second floor. I've explained to the user why his print jobs are going upstairs, but I have yet to figure out why the IP keeps changing. Any thoughts?

Does the printer change ip's, or does the users printer change. If the printer changes, it would affect more than the one user.

A guess:

Maybe your print server was setup to aqcquire ip address dynamically. In this scenario only the ip address change not the sharename.

So the config should be:
\\servername\printer_sharename (YES)
\\server_ip\printer_sharename (NO)

All of the network printers have static IP addresses assigned. The user's printer keeps switching IP ports. (I should have been clearer in my initial posting.) The ports are all set up in the printer settings of his computer, but for some reason, the port for a certain printer keeps switching to a different printer port. One day it will be printing to xx.xx.xx.17 then the next day it will print to xx.xx.xx.29. Their are about 8 printers setup for the profile, all of which are networked (TCP/IP) printers. But the switch only happens with identical printers on different floors. I have removed one of the printers from active directory publishing to see if that would fix it, but the problem still exists.

Since you don't want him to print on that particular port then delete the port from that PC.

Goto properties of that printer then choose 'Ports' Tab. Right click the undisirable port there then click 'Delete Port'.

The user is needs the capability to print to multiple printers on multiple floors. Deleting the printer is not an option. I have deleted all of his printers at one time and reloaded them, but that still has not corrected the problem.

I remember during NT4 days I've encounter the same problem. The Local username and the domain username are the same. It works when I delete the printer config locally but I delete the his local profile and remove his local username just to avoid the same problem again. Give it a try.
