Hello to all :)

I'll start with a small description of my network.

- 1st PC - WinXP - Realtek - TCP/IP - (no firewall)
- 2nd PC - Win2k - 3Com - TCP/IP - (no firewall)
- 3rd PC - Win98 - D-link(NE2000) - TCP/IP (share files and printer)

All my computer are connected to a LINKSYS gateway.
The LINKSYS is my DHCP server and the connection to the internet via my cable modem.
All my PC's receive IP/subnetmask from Linksys (OK).
All of them are in the same workgroup and have the same DNS servers.

With the same user and password i can browse (\\IP1) from WinXP to Win2000 and from Win2000 to WinXP.

MY PROBLEM !!!!
I CAN'T browse from Win98 to WinXP or Win98 to Win2000,
neither the oposite.
It's strange because they can PING between them ALL.

I'm no einstein and i'm lost.
If you could help me , please do. :)

Different or same file formats? NTFS? Fat32? ggebhart@clover.net
I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!

primobruno,

Make sure that there is an account on the Win2K and WinXP machines that exactly matches the account used to log on to the Win98 machine. File systems do not matter. Network sharing removes that as a concern since it is the machine hosting the "share" that actually handles the files.

Hope that helps.

Hi there :)
Found the SOLUTION !!!!
Because of my mom and her computer(win2000)...
i've disabled NETBEUI over TCP/IP !!! (ouch...sorry guys)
Now (after enabling it) i can browse with no problems.
BUT....WAIT A MINUTE...
i still want to give my computer (WINXP) more protection
so i've decided to use OWN windows tools.
(NIC Properties->Advanced-->Protect my Computer.....)
Looks fine.
No one can browse me BUT i can browse everyone
and still use (but not share) a network printer.
MY 2nd PROBLEM !!!!
I use a Linksys "EtherFast Cable/Dsl Router" to connect to the internet.
Using NETBEUI isn't more unsecure?
i know i have a firewall in the Linksys but still...
My Question: Is it enough to use WinXP's firewall?

primobruno,

NetBEUI is a simple protocol and is not routable. That is, it can only be used on the same subnet so anyone outside of your LAN would not be able to use it. I would still use some firewall (XP, ZoneAlarm, Tiny, etc) in addition to the NAT on the router.

Hope that helps.

You guys were great to me. THANK YOU ALL!!!!
:) :) :) :) :) :):) :) :)
I have one more question for now...
I see Win95/Win98 uses TCP/IP and NETBEUI as diferent protocols.
BUT in Win2000 and WinXP we have "NETBEUI over TCP/IP".
what this means?
it means the "new" way of using NETBEUI is attached to TCP/IP?
What are the implications?
Can anyone (on the internet) see my computer ,browsing to it?(example: \\195.164.200.50)
I think port 139 on the TCP/IP is the guilty one (for browsing) or not?

primobruno,

That's because the implementations of TCP/IP are different in Win95/98 and Win2K/XP. The TCP/IP in Win98 is not NetBIOS enabled so NetBEUI has to be run as a separate protocol. In XP, TCP/IP IS NetBIOS enabled so you do not need to run the NetBEUI protocol.

Your Linksys gateway is hiding the address by way of NAT so your computer is not accessible unless you configure the Linksys to allow it. It does not respond to a ping, BTW.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip.
You're right.(once again-hehehe)
My linksys NAT's all my addresses and..
i've opened only port 80 to allow HTTP because i have a WEB SERVER.
Thanks again for the tips :)
