I have about 5 machines on a windows 98se pier-to-pier network. If I want to find a computer all I need to do is go to find computer and every computer is talking to each other…….But the problem I am having is when I double click on Network Neighborhood nothing comes up I know that in win 98 it picks a machine to be the controller which has the database that controls what you see in the Network Neighborhood and that it should refresh it self in a few hours but these machines have been running all weekend and still nothing, I have tried to reset everything to no avail. Please help thanks

Normally computers don't appear in the network neighborhood window unless they currently have either file sharing or printer sharing enabled.

The above is correct, You will not see the computers if you do not have File/Print sharing enabled.

An easy way to see the other computer you wish to access ib by clicking.....
Start...
Run
\\computername

Press enter.

You will see all the computers in the list. It may be a good idea to set all the cumputers in the same workgroup and all the IP's starting with the same subset ie... 192.168.0.1 and so on.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

All of the computers have file and print sharing enabled, and as far as the ip they are running off a DSL router wich is issuing IP address 10.0.0.2 and so on any other iteas

Hello hartbros,
You say you have "file and print share' enabled.
Have you enabled sharing for at least one file, folder or drive on each pc?

yes every machine has their hard drive shared

I had this problem before, I solved it by installing NETBUI, I could ping all machines but couldn’t see any of them on network neighbourhood. When I installed NETBUI, there they were in all their glory. Hope this helps.

I've had this happen before. If you have a software enabled
firewall on the machines they wont see each other..just my 2 cents worth

If you do not have NETBUI installed on the machines you will need to setup a browser master of some description.

But for a small home network NETBUI should be ust fine.
