I have a workgroup network of 24 Pcs. When I log onto each machine and go into My Network Places and Computers Near Me. Sometimes the PCs are all listed sometimes not?

If I map a network drive to them, they are there, but I cannot always see them?

Other users are seeing the same issue, sometimes they can see the other pcs and sometimes not?

What on earth is Windows 2000 doing?

This never happened with Windows 98 :(

Win2K allocates network connections "on demand". That is, unless a connection is used, it will eventually be disconnected. This is to save resources. It should not affect anything you are doing across the network, as the connection will be re-established when necessary. IF you go through the 'hood' and select "Entire Network", it should open all the connections for you.

In addition, I have my PCs of off the back of a UNIX network via a Samba server, but I do not believe that to be the issue.

When I go to the top directory "hood" and search the entire network and click down to my local workgroup, I still cannotsee all the Pcs on the network, or the network shares?

I have two pcs, one I can see all the PCs on our Network the other I cannot.

When I reboot them both, I can no longer see the networked PCs under Computers Near Me on either of them?

Except if I map or search for computers?

It is not so much that I wish to use the connection, just for the Browser service to advertise what PCs are avialable?

Do I need to edit the registry/system settings to get the browser to update more often for each PC?

I've fixed it :)

Control Panel, Admin Tools, Settings, Network Connections.

Change the Default setting from Manual to Automatic..

Re-boot and login :)

Now I can see the network connections permanently for all networked machines and shares.

22 more machines to go :(

Thanx for your help
