I know Netmon is part of SMS, but I wish there were a seperate forum for general discussion!

Anyone here using it? Sr. Network Engineer

Yes, I've used Netmon quite a bit. When my network started using a SMS server, the amount of traffic generated placed an enormous strain on the bandwidth (some of my customers only have a 128kbs). I used Netmon to perform traces on determine which workstations were generating the most SMS traffic. It worked well enough to allow us to tweak the network. Unfortunately, tbe upper echelons made us turn off the SMS server due to the strain. It was deemed too costly to increase the bandwidth to accommodate SMS.

Most of the guys from the old Network General/Sniffer days (developers included) simply use Netmon and/or Ethereal today. The days of needing specialized $20,000 hardware are no longer necessary. Unless you're in a network that's running odd protocols and you need a library of 500+ de-codes, Netmon gets the job done quite well! There are some minor enhancements in the 2.5 beta that I like!
