Hello.

first the info, that I'm not a cobol-programmer and that I can't get hands on the sourcecode.

The Problem:
On our new Dell Notebook a Cobol-App won't work. It can not connect to the Database-Server. It's a Unix-Server.

The Windows-Apps CAN connect to the same server. No Problems via Telnet, FTP or Windows/Samba. Even the Databasefiles a reachable this way.

All other Clients, most of them also with Win XP SP2, work without Problems...

What we tried:
- Disabled all not used Network-Adapters
- Disabled internal Modem
- Checke Network Protocols
- Disabled Win Firewall

So, has anybody another suggestion for us?

THANK YOU!

How do you know that the app is a Cobol app?

My guess would be that if it is, it is mostly likely going to try to connect to your database server via ODBC. Have you checked to see if there is an ODBC data source defined for your database?

Did this app come installed with the Dell or was it installed after? Is there no support for this app?

Code what you mean,
and mean what you code!
But by all means post your code!

Hi.
I know that it is an cobol prg cause the programmer told me.
And before you ask, the firm isn't very good in suport, in fakt totaly bad! And they got no idea how to solve this problem.
As you can see, the app isn't a Dell-App and we can't hope for help by the programmers....

To your question:
It runs very well on more than 20 other clients. Desktops and Laptops... no Problems. Some with nearly the same OS and configuration... that's why I don't understand this...

I think, maybe the problem could be a Dell-driver, cause that's the only difference: It's the first Dell-Laptop.
But a Dell-Desktop, bought together with the Laptops works without problems...

ODBC is not the problem, because the app don't need it. On other clients it works without any ODBC data source.

Any other ideas?

Thanks, Joerg

Joerg,

And does the new notebook run Vista?

How was the application installed on the new notebook?

What company is the vendor of the COBOL application? What is the name of the EXE file that is executed when you run the application?

Hi.
Sorry, here are more Infos.

The client-system is a Win XP SP2 incl. all updates.
The Server is a SCO-Unix.

The Errormessage we get changes a little bit every time, but it's like this "...Socket error encountered on ioctl in receive from client. Error Code: 10038 exited"

So by now I guess it's not a cobol problem (if so, I'm in the wrong forum). The way I see it, it's a Problem with the used port (5001) or something like that. But I tried without firewall, etc. - no change. :(

Perhaps the internal firewall software is blocking the request? You may wish to run an Ethereal trace on this machine and on a working one and compare them.

Regards,

Glenn

You might try this:

Go to the Start button > to the Run box > type cmd and the command window opens

now type: netsh winsock reset

this will repair your corrupted Winsock

I can't believe it, but it's everytime the same
just a little "click" but you have to know where!...

However, thanks to Mr. Regan!
That was all I have to do! Now it works!

Thanks to all others for the replies, I've learned a lot!
