I am the jack-of-all-trades and master of SOME for my company. We are experiencing some issues with speed performance on our network. I need to discover what the problem is that is causing the slowdown of traffic. I have downloaded Ethereal and have done some live captures but cannot really determine if there is anything untoward going on. It seems like viral behavior, but I cannot locate anything with my network AV software. I am not a network guru, but I know enough to get by. Well, I can't just 'get by' in this situation. I would like to get some thoughts by the gurus here by posting some of the sniffing results. Let me know and I'll post them. Thank you in advance!

Thanks for the reply but I am confused as this is not a problem with people not being able to browse their local drives. This is a network-wide badwidth problem. How would a new registry entry on my local machine help me diagnose the problems plaguing my network? I am grateful for any thoughts you may have.

Never mind. I have figured out the problem. We had a user with multiple Bit Torrent clients open with max. connections set at 20+ per client. The Bit Torrent activity has been stopped and the network is back to normal. Thanks for your thoughts, bcastner!

The second registy entry removes the default search for remote scheduled tasks, and often helps quite a bit.

I have seen more and more of the issues discussed in this MS KB:
The value of the following KB article is the links at the end. Resolve SMB signing and opportunistic locking issues:
Finally, if you have XP clients, upgrade to Service Pack 2. It makes a world of difference:

Wow! Great information that is much appreciated. I currentyl have no XP clients on the network but that may change. Always looking for more useful knowledge resources. You have put me on track to quite a few and I appreciate it!
