hi everyone,
i have a problem networking my machines i am not using a hub but using crossover cables connecting 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 then using the internet sharing but connecting 1 to 2 is ok when i enable the second network card on machine number 2 it stops all internet and network activity between 1 and 2. I have checked the irq and all the pci ones seem to be set to irq 11 and i cant get them to change as the tab is greyed out.

using
Windows 2000 pro
amd athlonXP 2100+
256 ddr ram
using 2 10/100 pci network cards

thanx for any help in advance

just to add i also got it to automaticaly get ip address

Not directly related to the cause of the problem, but Windows 2000 does support IRQ sharing and seems to handle it correctly. This is in contrast to earlier versions of DOS and Windows that had to have a seperate interrupt for each adaptor board.

Now to the problem. I would presume that for the two adaptor fitted in each machine, that the network client, adaptor and protocol drivers have been correctly installed? Can you confirm that each network card has a different IP address and that the subnet mask is the same for all adapators in all machines?

Can you also confirm that all the network cards work indepently and that the crossover cables all work?

thanx guys i have got most of it sorted as internet works on 1 + 2 but not on 3 and i can swap files on all but now i cant activate internet sharing between 2 + 3 as it says "an error occured while sharing was being enabled - a lan connection is already cofigured with the ip address that is required for automatic ip addressing " all are on windows 2000 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and the nic card 1 ip is set to obtain ip address automatically nic card 2 is ip 192.168.0.1 nic card 3 is set to obtain ip address automatically nic card 4 192.168.0.2 and nic card 5 is set to obtain ip address automatically see diagram here

thanx for the help

I've seen 5 port 10Mbps hubs for sale for under $10.00 one as low as $5.00.

For such a low dollar investment, the transfer rate is tremendous! plus you only need one NIC per computer.

yeah but as i have the cables already and set up i would prefer to try this way first any ideas ?

thanx
