I have a user (actually two which really makes it weird) . . . both with Compaq DeskPro EN's running the stock NIC, each exhibiting the same problem. Both machines are running W2K and all the latest updates, etc....

Neither machine seems able to connect to our network (but had no problem on Friday). Per "Device Manager", the cards are recongnized and supposedly working, but when you take a look on the back of the card, they are both "dark" (no status lights at all.

I have tried switching data ports, cables, updated the drivers and even tried swapping with a new Intel PRO/100 M Desktop Adapter (and fresh set of drivers), but no matter what I do, I get that annoying "Network Cable Unplugged" message from the tray icon and even the new card is dark.

Anyone have any clues on this for me. It is baffling.

Thanks.

Any FireWalls installed? Try deleting the adapter, and reinstalling it. I had a problem on a brand new Dell laptop, that couldn't connect. Deleted and reinstalled, and all was golden!

Your problem can be beyond the patch cable. For troubleshooting these I throw a hub or switch in the middle of the connection between the machine and the wall plate.
The fact of both being OK on Friday sounds significant.

I have a Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop which after 10 minuntes or so just logs me off for no apparent reason.

I started going through the process of elimination by removing the battery. This did not work because the computer still experienced the same problem by just logging me off.

I checked all my connection to the laptop and everything was fine.

I went into event viewer to see if any logs were written to the system log in event viewer but could not find any reasons as to why the laptop would log me off.

I also checked in the application log of event viewer and did not find anything there that gave insight as to why I was being logged off.

I went in and checked the power settings to make sure that they were not shutting down the machine after a couple of minutes of use, but everything was set for never when using an AC source.

Is there anyone out there that can offer some insight as to what might be the problem because, I am stumped?

How about starting a new thread for the inspiron problem? And probably would be best in the XP forum.

When you said you switched data ports do you mean at the other end of the cable (hub, switch, rotuter etc)? How about plugging in a different computer into the same data port on the other side and see if it connects?

Found my problem . . . it was so stupid, I won't bother explaining it here, but just happy to say that it was not my fault (except for the fact that it is something I should probably have checked first.)

Thanks for everyone's help.

Come on, fill us in! Sometimes I can be pretty stupid too!

OK fine . . .

The gent that I work with was freeing up some switch ports (not known by me), and his eye-sight (or lack there of), read the empty wall port of another jack as a different number and subsequently he free'd up this jack instead. If I had realized he was doing work at the rack I would have checked that first . . . but turns out he didn't tell me for most of the day, so I was on a wild goose chase.
