I have a system that is now about 2.5 years old, and it recently decided to not be able to use the internet. I didn't change any settings on the box, and it worked fine one day and didn't work when I went to use it a couple days later. Since then, I have wiped my harddrive, fdisked it, reinstalled XP, installed SuSE Linux, replaced the NIC, plugged the NIC into different slots, tried different cables to connect the NIC to the switch, tried going straight to the cable modem, updated my BIOS revision to the latest version, rebooted the machine without the floppy, DVD, and CD-RW drives unplugged. Nothing is working for me. When in windows, I was able to see that my machine appeared to be sending some packets out, but it didn't receive any.

I am looking for any suggestions as to how I can get my system to be able to get on the internet again. I hate to think that I am going to have to replace my mobo to get this to work.

1- ping 127.0.0.1, loopback to check your nic
2- update driver again...check manufacturer web site for up to date info
3- assuming you said u've replaced your nic, so is not a onboard nic?
4- set a manual assigned ip addy onto your card and check connectivity

that's all i can think of for now.....

You didn't mention how you are connecting to the internet. If through a cable modem and trough a cable company you may have to ipconfig /renew for a valid ip. Also some people require you card ID.

1. I can successfully ping myself via the loopback.
2. I also had the same problem when I booted into Suse Linux. Along with that, I have wiped my hard drive and started fresh, so Windows should have picked up the drivers automatically. In looking on the Netgear website, the driver for the particular NIC that I am using is supposed to be on the Windows CD.
3. No, it is not an onboard NIC. It is a Netgear FA311 which is 32 bit PCI.
4. I have tried the manual IP, and I still had no connection.

I connect to the internet with cable. My computer and one other system are plugged into a switch with the cable modem plugged into the uplink slot. The other computer works fine on the internet. I have tried releasing and renewing my IP already. On the renew, it takes more time than it should then comes back with the Windows default alternate IP address, or when I manually set the IP, it came back with that. What do you mean for the card ID? I have put in the MAC address, which I found on the card, but that didn't help any. When my system was working properly, I didn't have to input any card ID.
