Network Connections Service - Problem

When I try to open my Network Connections I get an error message "The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections Service is enabled and running"... I went to the services (services.msc) and saw that the service was set to manual and stopped. So I brought up the properties and set to "automatic" and then tried to start the service... however, I got the following error message "Could not start the Network Connections service on Local Computer. Error 127: The specifies procedure could not be found".

The path to executable in the properties of the Network Connections service is "C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs". In the Dependecies it states that this service is dependent on Remote Procedure Call (RPC)... I checked and it is set to "automatic" and is started.

Any ideas on why this isn't working?

The support.microsoft.com link provided many different items - most of which I tried without any impact on my problem.
When I tried step #6 "Verify that the network DLL files are registered correctly: Click Start/Run. Type cmd.exe, and then click OK. Type the following lines, and then press ENTER after you type each line. Click OK when the RegSvr32 dialog box appears for each command.
regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll, then Restart the computer." I got errors on 2 as follows:
1 - regsvr32 netshell.dll = "DllRegisterServer in netshell.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80040154"
2 - regsvr32 netcfgx.dll = "DllRegisterServer in netcfgx.dll succeeded"
3 - regsvr32 netman.dll = "LoadLibrary("netman.dll") failed - the specified procedure could not be found"

Unfortunately this article doesn't explain what should be done when encountering errors!

The other 2 links seem to focus on these same 3 commands with one person in the Google link stating that his system was corrected after he ran the 3 commands! Not mine... Another person wrote "here is the solution as supplied to me by Jeffery Gu of Microsoft Tech. Support ... I ended up having to do a Windows XP Repair installation, then reapply all Critical Updates"... Aaaaghhhh!!!! How does one do a "repair installation"?

I also tried running the command ipconfig (using a cmd.exe window)and got the following error message "The procedure entry point DhcpNotifyMediaReconnected could not be located in the dynamic library DHCPCSVC.DLL"!!

I forgot to mention that despite these errors my connections all still work!

Any other thoughts??

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Services.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates (no problem if you substitute them with SP2) but your files and programs will be untouched.

Well I tried everything (including setting up dependency walker... interesting debug program)... but in the end it took the reinstallation of Windows XP to fix the problem.
