I had svchost making zillion SMPT connections.
Eventually I got rid of it by running MalwareBytes AntiMalware program.
That resulted in this state:
-- Network Connections Folder is empty.
-- Network Connections Service is missing altogether in "Services". (not listed)
-- "Workstation" Service also missing in Services. (not listed)
-- No Network Icon in Tray
-- IPCONFIG shows 0.0.0.0

Tried so far:
-- regsvr32 netshell.dll, regsvr32 netcfgx.dll, regsvr32 netman.dll...all returned success..but made no difference.

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

I would start by uninstalling the Network Devices (all incl. the 1394 Firewire), then rebooting and let windows reinstall them...

if that does not help, then I would go ahead and attempt a Repair Install, due to the fact that the Workstation Server is missing...

a repair install will not touch any of your data, it only resets certain parts of the registry, and copies system files over the installed ones, replacing any damaged or missing files... You will though loose all Hotfixes, e.g. if the XP cd you use has SP2 then all after SP2, if you slipstream SP3 onto it first, then all after SP3...

Slipstreaming is best done with nLite:
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

Resetting the winsock can be performed via command line too:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

workstation service missing
thread779-844187

Workstation Service will not start. Can't read network
thread779-1006464

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

"SUCCESS"
Following Missing Keys Added to Registry "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services" (exported from another XP-SP2 laptop)
-- dhcp
-- DNSCache
-- lanmanserver
-- lanwanworkstation
-- netman
-- nla
-- rasman
-- ShellHWDetection
Reboot

Result:
-- I got the icon in Tray back, along with Network Connections in Conrol panel.
-- Icon shows "connected"
-- However, no flow of packets in either direction

Next: Did following:
-- netsh winsock reset
-- netsh int ip reset
Reboot
Result: Nothing...same as before.

Next: Uninstalled NIC in Device Manager and re-booted.

Now every thing good !!

Hope this helps some one else.....I have searched the internet for 3 days and not found this any where !!

Glad you got it up and running, and for posting the fix that led to success...

and that you did not have to do a REPAIR install...

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

Linney and BadBigBen,

I am sorry to say that I have landed into similar trouble, again, on the same laptop, with a different outcome..

-- A repair-install is hanging at the very end..

-- I can log into the machine in SafeMode..no problem

-- In regular mode, I get the Windows Activation problem --> "A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code 0x800004005"

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Take a look at Method 2:

"Error Code: 0x80004005” error message when you install Windows XP

but before you do that, if you had SP3 installed and are trying to repair with a SP2 XP CD, then you may have to first slipstream SP3 onto a XP CD, before you do a repair install...

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

Thanks..but I had already tried that Method 2...did not work..

I am not doing any SP3 stuff ..

Question: Why does it let me in in "Safe Mode" and "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"..but not in "Safe Mode with Networking"...

Is there some clue in this behavior ?

It may be that your machine is just allowing you only Safe Mode access and running in a Restricted Mode until the Activation/Validation process is successful?

You could try running the Repair once more, make sure that all unnecessary hardware is removed and that the Bios is set to safe defaults and that any Bios Scanning is disabled.

See if the second time around you are successful?

If you are not (do it now if you like) use Safe Mode to get your valuable data backed up to USB or anything else available and then Format and clean install XP.

The security database is corrupted.

Followed the instructions (reproduced below)from: "(Above URL looks funny..but the hyperlink is good..)

Now I am back to working.. !!

Run esentutl /g to check the integrity of the security database at
%windir%\Security\Database\Secedit.sdb.

If the database is corrupt:

1.. Attempt to recover it by running esentutl /r on the %windir%\Security folder.
If this fails, attempt to repair it by running with esentutl /p on
%windir%\Security\Database\Secedit.sdb.
2.. After that, delete the log files in %windir%\Security.

Good news... thanks for posting the fix... it may come in handy, in the future...

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

Thanks for posting that. One thing that I don't understand is how you linked "A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code 0x800004005", to "The security database is corrupted".

It would be interesting to know how the first error was linked to the final solution.

While repair installing windows, I was getting errors like "cannot copy staxmem.dll"..and a bunch of similar "cannot copy..." errors.

My License and product keys were genuine, and the source files existed on the CD and were not corrupt. (I tested by copying manually on a different working PC).

So that left some thing besides the files and license keys...

When I researched on 'staxmem.dll', I uncovered this one:

And the next one:

Thank you for posting that additional link you had, that makes the solution more understandable to a simpleton like me. Much appreciated.
