Trying to figure out what is cuasing us not to be able to connect to this laptop. The laptop shows that all ports are listening, but using portqry on my end shows NOT listening.

We need to get RDP to work and so far no go.

1.Firewall is disables --> we can ping

This is what we tried so far:

C:\>ping tomg

Pinging tomg [192.168.101.7] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.101.7: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.101.7: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.101.7: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 192.168.101.7:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

C:\>net time \\tomg
System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

C:\>net view tomg
System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

Typial causes of an error 53:
. the remote computer does not have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled;
. Client for Microsoft Networking not enabled, or Workstation service is not running;
. File and Printer sharing not enabled, or Server service is not running.

Checked Netbios TCP/IP it is enabled
Clint for MS Netwroking is enabled
Workstation service is running
File and Print sharing enable
Server service is running

I am still so confused why it does not work...

The only other credible argument is a firewall issue. Watch for hidden firewalls in antivirus programs; PC-Illan is famous for this.

Some firewall products will still block traffic even if set to 'Disabled.' Use MSCONFIG to prevent them from loading at startup, reboot, and test again.

We are using Trend Micro and my desktop seems to be fine with it running but will turn it off and try it out.

Nope turn it off and restarted still nothing.

man this sucks

We had it in both, but right now it is in Peer-to-peer

The firewall issue will be on the laptop, not the dektop.

Yea we uninstalled it from the laptop and also started the least amount of programs too. Almost like the internal NIC does not except any connections.

Do an ipconfig /all on the laptop and post it here. It is possible the Node Type is configured incorrectly.

Just to be sure, make sure you repair your tcpip registry entries, and reset the stach, using say, winfix_v2.exe.
But I also agree with the firewall issue, sometimes they just wont let go..
I would re-install, then uninstall, the firewall software, then run winfix, and reboot and try again...
Actually I would LOSE the firewall software, personally.

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

Where do i get winfix_v2.exe I seem not to be able to find it??

I never had a firewall installed, other then the one windows came with which I disabled right away.

I downloaded both of these files. Are either of these the same file you are talking about??

winfix.exe
WinsockxpFix.exe

evans17,

One basic thing to check: if you are on a network with multiple machines, make sure there are no other machines using address 192.168.101.7. Easy way to do that is just to unplug your laptop and ping that address from another machine on the network.

install the IPX SPX protocall on both machenes. Go to control panel, network. Click on the advanced tab.
Down to advanced settings. Make sure the bindings for IPX Spx are bound to client, and file and print share. I recomend unbinding tcp/ip. Also make sure that the service service is started. And go to administrative tools, computer management. Click on Local users and groups. Double click on the Guest account. Make sure the guest account is not disabled. XP pro uses this acount for networking.

Do you know the IP of the machine your trying to access?
Try the net view ip_of_other_machine
For the net time are you trying to sync time?
If so net time /setsntp:Ip_of_tomg

Are there more than one WINS server in this network?
Are both test machines pointing at the same internal DNS server as the first listed DNS server?
Is the notebook set to register with the DNS server?

LOL Well I got is working now. I followed everything you guys have told to me to try. I did try using IPX that did not help, Net view still did not work, and we have one wins server. The dns settings were correct.
I finally decided to use WinsockxpFix.exe and see what happens. Well that fixed the whole problem.

Dell called back and let us know that we need to run WinsockxpFix.exe on the all of our Dell laptops to make them work right. Too bad they do not include that doc with their laptops. Dell told us it had to do something with TCP/IP Reg. settings from which they install the OS with compared what MS wants to have.

So anytime anyone gets a Dell Laptop make sure to run this fix before doing anything!!

WinsockxpFix.exe

For the Winsockfix a current link is always kept in faq779-4625
