One of the computers in my schools lab has an issue staying on the network. The connectivity icon blinks on and off about every second. The red "X" comes on and leaves.... I have no idea whats causing this as this was formerly a computer that did not have any issues on our network. All the computers in the bldg are running win2k and are all part of the same workgroup.

Thanks in advance!

I dont believe so... It was formerly working just fine.. no problems. No computers have been added to the network. to top it off 80% of the computers in the building are turned off due to it being mid-term break, so thats greatly reducing the risk of conflict.

Any other ideas??

Hi!

I had similar issues a while back and it turned out to be my network cables. The building I work in was constructed with cat 4s and so I had to cut and crimp the cables as cat 5s in order for me to connect to a new hub.
The thread is: thread575-486977

Agree w/ LAdySlinger. It sounds like a bad cable. Or, it could be a bad port on the router/switch, a malfunctioning NIC.
Plug the cable into a different machine in the lab and see what happens
Try a new cable from the NIC to the plug in.
Check on the router where the able for that box plugs and look for link lights. Try moving the cable to a different port and see if that makes a difference(label the original port as bad if it does).

I had that problem twice and had to change the network card port configuration from auto configure to 100 megabit half duplex.

dpresley -- Good suggestions here.

Additionally, we had one particular computer with the same issues. On ours, it turned out that the PCI NIC was barely making contact in the slot. It was essentially plugging and unplugging itself. Admittedly, this is not a likely reason for your problem, but it might be something to check nonetheless.

You have all been very helpful and i appreciate it TONS! I was thinking it might be the cable, so i connected the computer to a cable that i knew to be good. So thats out. Next i was thinking it may be the NIC, faulty connection or maybe a faulty NIC. So far i have not been back into work this week (we're in mid semester break! ahhhh) so i've not been able to try all these things out. I will and will get back on.

THANKS!
