I have an old IBM Aptiva, 2168-A40 model number (yeah, very old). I just installed a Compaq 3121 10/100 fast ethernet nic and I'm trying to hook it up to my routed internet connection. However, after I installed the NIC, I kept getting IRQ errors left and right. I kept setting the IRQ configs manually, but to no avail. HELP!!!!!!

What operating system are you using? You say you've tried setting IRQs manually - where are you doing this? In the BIOS? Within the operating system? Did the NIC come with a setup or diags disk? Boot machine to DOS only and run diags. Did it pass?

I tried setting the IRQ's manually through Windows 98SE; I have in no way tried it through the BIOS. The NIC didn't come with any disks. I have not tried it through DOS yet, but I will give it a shot and will let you know. Sorry for leaving too much info out (was very tired and fustrated when I wrote the message:))

Besides changing around the IRQ's in the BIOS, also try moving the PCI card to a different slot on the motherboard. This sometimes helps with memory address conflicts.

Out of curiosity, what's the speed of the CPU? I used to own that same model/series Aptiva (2168-something). Mine was a 166 Non-MMX pentium...

It's also a 166 Pentium non MMX. I switched the two cards and now I'm getting a fatal "Msgrv32" error. This has happened twice after two installations of Win98SE. Could my hard drive be going on me? I ran Scandisk extensively with no errors. Anyone want a boat anchor? (laughs)

Right at startup, after it detects the NIC

What's the exact message? I'm willing to bet that the NIC driver is loading at startup but is having difficulty initializing the device (most likely because it cannot see it). Uninstall the NIC completely removing the driver and entry in device manager.

Also take a look here:

The message:
"Msgrv32 has caused a general protection fault in MSOSS.DLL"

After I rebooted, it started working (finally!). After I accessed the internet and ran Windows Update, IE crashed saying the same thing:
"IExplore has caused a general protection fault in MSOSS.DLL"

I tried looking it up last night and I got nowhere. What is this file MSOSS.DLL?

Sorry I've been away for a while, but here's an update: I talked to a friend of mine and he said that there was an incompatability with the chipsets (NIC has an Intel chipset, the computer has an OPTi Viper chipset). He also said that Intel has an "attitude" with other chipsets. If anyone else has any more suggestions, they are truely appreciated.
