Network Card Help

Hi, I am having problems installing a new network, for 2 computers, installed win nt for the server and set up the domain name, ip address. and have set up the win 98 computer with ip address.

i have connected the computers by using a twisted cat 5 cable which has been tested and works ok on another network.

i can ping the network card for that computer but cannot ping the other computer.

What have i missed out, i think i could be somthing on the nt server like a setting for the network card, but i can not find anything wrong.

Workstations on a network will ping each other irregardless of failure of any other computer. If your server has a bad NIC card, the workstations will still ping each other - just not the server.

When you can't ping, you always have a TCP/IP error. Everyone must be in the same class/subnet and the correct workgroup/domain. If you double click on network neighborhood and then look for your workgroup or domain, can you see the other computers? If not, then there could be WINS/DNS errors, IP addresses not in the same class (ie: 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 would see each other if the subnet were identical (255.255.255.0) and the Domain and/or workgroup were identical. If you are using WINS resolution, make sure all the workstations point their WINS to the correct WINS Server.

If you are 100% positive your TCP/IP settings are correct, then you need to start troubleshooting your hardware. Here's the order I use. Go down the list until it is fixed

1. Replace patch cables.
2. Move patch cable to a different port on the hub
3. isolate which computer can't see the others.
4. Replace the NIC in that computer
5. If this didn't work, go back to your TCP/IP settings - the problem is there.

Thanks it turns out that the zonet network cards where not installed correctly, not sure how to do it as say's that i need to change bios settings. Thanks

Just for anyone out there, if you have zonet cards you can not link to PC's together using a cross over cable

I didn't see where you joined the unit to a domain/workgroup, did you perhaps forget that little point ?
