Network Cable Unplugged

I just installed Windows 2000 Professional, SP3. I was running Windows 98 SE and could connect to the Internet using a cable modem with no problem. With Win2k, I can't connect. There is a computer icon in the system tray with a red "x" along with the message "network cable unplugged." I verified the cable connection and know that the cable is good because it works on another computer. I tried a crossover cable with the same results. Could there be a conflict with the IRQ's? I noticed that the network card has the same IRQ as two other devices.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it's a known good cable then it could be a bad NIC or switch port making it think it has no cable. It's also possible that you have more than 1 NIC and you're seeing the "other" one as unplugged. try opening a command prompt and typing 'ipconfig /all' to see all adapters and settings. This info might help you diagnose the problem.

Do you need to go through any setup process (again) for the broadband connection, now you've effectively changed machines? As Fred said - use Ipconfig to check out your configuration. If the machine is also connected to a LAN, try swapping the internet NIC and the LAN NIC to see if any different.

Shared IRQ's are not unusual. Try playing with the link speed settings for the NIC itself. The Win2k drivers are a little different in their behavior than the Win98 drivers. The default setting in most cases will be auto-negotiate. Try one of the other settings to see if you can get it to work.
