Hi,

I've just moved into a flat and I get free internet access via a LAN in the building. When I try to connect to the LAN via a network wall port in my room I get the error :

"Network Cable Unplugged".

I am running windows XP professional. The network cable is plugged in and I doubt that there is a problem with it so I wondered if anybody had any ideas how to resolve this.

Should I be using a standard data network cable or should I have a crossover cable for this purpose ? The machine says that the network card is working fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt.

From the sounds of it I would imagine a standard straight-through cable is wat you need. I would try another card if you have one available and if that fails, talk the to landlord.

Standard Ethernet cable is what's needed. What is also needed is for the network port to be correctly patched in so that you are on the network. Doesn't sound like you are, so that's my guess.

Depends how the LAN is configured, so I'm guessing you have an RJ45 port in your room, and somewhere else in the building, there's a similar port, or the other end of that cable which is supposed to be connected to a hub or router. I'd guess it isn't.

Do you get a little light on your network card indicating it has a connection? If not then the other end of the connection is probably not connected to the router\switch.

Thanks guys,

This has been a big help. I think a word with the flat management is required.

Matt.
