Hi,

I am running a Windows 2000 domain and using Windows 2000 Professional for all the workstations. I also have 2 subnets on site.

My problem is that when I look through Network Neighbourhood at all the machines on the network, I can't see any of the workstations that are on the second subnet (when I am on the 1st). I have tried restarting the computer browsing service on each of the DC's but this hasn't helped.

Can anyone help me with this problem as I desperatly need to see the machines.

Cheers.

PS - I can ping all machines.

Probably it has something to do with the settings of subnet mask in the ip-configuration.

The Subnet Mask is correctly setup as I am using DHCP. I am also using WINS and DNS so all workstations are set to automatically pick up all IP related settings from the DC's. Any other ideas??

Not sure if this is completely relevant but check your default gateway.

Can you ping any of the machines on the other subnet, sounds like its a name wins type problem, tried adding an LMHOSTS entry to see if it resolves that way?

This does not sound like a Server/Workstation problem. This sounds like a swtch/hub problem.

I can ping all machines on the network (subnet1 & 2) and all of the hubs/switches/routers are correctly set-up as I used to be able to see all machines when I was running NT4/Netware 4.10. It is only since I have changed to Windows 2000 Server that I am experiencing problems.

Cheers.

This really sounds like WINS as broadcasts won't go across routers so you master browser on eiter subnet will only know about its own subnet, is there just one WINS server? Again try adding a pc on subnet one to a LMHOSTS file on a pc in subnet two and visa versa, I would put money on that. Its most certainly not a switch/hub problem as they have nothing to do with network browsing (apart from the obvious!)

Also have you tried service pack 2, I've had some network browsing problems which this fixed.

I will give the LMHOST bit a go, and I only run Professional and Server at Service Pack 2.

I think I may have found the answer to my own question as I have been reading a Microsoft article which says that there are known problems with browsing multiple subnets if your master browser/DC servers are multi-homed!! All of my servers are multi-homed as the routers are big bottle-necks. So, I am going to put a test server together, promote it to a DC and see if that solves anything.

I will post the results on here shortly.

Cheers.
