Installed the first (of I'm sure many) XP Pro workstations on the LAN today. Everything went really well, except I cannot browse the XP box from the file server. I can ping it just fine, but I can't see it. I wanted to send the user's data from his old hard drive back over the wire, but I can't "see" him. Any idea what might be happening?

Server is running NT4 SP6, as is the domain controller and, guess what? I CAN browse him from the domain controller. Weird, huh? Any ideas what is going on? I know its gotta be something simple, but I just can't "think" now. I guess my head is still spinning from touring around the alien environment of the XP network control panel.

Thanks,

Rob

I'll bet by now you can see that new XP machine. Takes 15 min. for WINS(NT4) to update for new machine. Less if no WINS just master browser.

Is it a way to stop user login a w98 station locally, in a NT network?

That question seems like it should be in it's own thread, 'tcheong'. The answer is yes. if you don't have profiles enabled on the Win98 machine, then delete all "*.pwl" files on the hard drive. Then in the network neighborhood properties, change the "Primary Network Logon" from Windows Logon to Client for MS Networks, click "OK" then reboot. When you are prompted for the Windows 98 password, click "Cancel" or press escape. Then you can logon to the network and not be hassled with the local logon.
