I require software that will allow me to:
- Record where my users have been when on the Internet
- Monitor the content of email messages
- Allow an accurate record of a user's activities

Oh, and must not cost me the earth!

I believe windump will do this for you. I haven't used it myself though.

Lakeside Software's SysTrack and SysLock can help to lock out applications, as well as view/control the websites your users are allowed to visit; without impacting system performance.

SysTrack tracks websites/pages visited by users and generate alerts, actions (shut down the browser) & notifications if necessary. SysTrack can also audit which applications they are using, and with SysLock shut down unauthorized application usage automatically.

Examples of apps you may not want running in your environment could include virus's, games, resource intensive apps, or sites like kazza.com and weatherbug.com that consume large amounts of resources.

If you would like additional information about SysTrack, please contact me.

Good luck!

I was asked to looking to this issue by my boss. We do not use a proxy server for internet access. What are my other options for remote loging of internet usage other that get to each users PC?

where are you from?
in my country (germany) you would go to jail if you do that, especially "-Monitor the content of email messages", and the other stuff you would have to tell every user in advance (with the users signature that you made him aware of that) befor you could do it.

check out
Audit Wizard I've used this. You can e-mail it to them, put them scan in the login script or pass it out on floppy. The results of the scan will tell you
1)Operating System
2)All programs installed
3)Where people have been on the internet and these are just a few. I don't remember the cost, but the fact that it will tell you if people are on the wrong sites or if they are running software they shouldn't is worth it. It's great.

In fcat we have to have the signed agreement for everyone here as well. However, schools have additional responsibilities that conflict with the perceived rights of the user. Since we supply the Internet and Email we have to show that we are ensuring that we offer a safe and useful environment in which to learn. To do this does mean that we need to monitor usage and deter some students from abusing the system.

i understand that, but to monitor the content of emails is a step to far, and restricting the i-net would also do it (in conjunction with the threat of being exspelled if misuse/tampering).

"we have to show that we are ensuring that we offer a safe and useful environment in which to learn. To do this does mean that we need to monitor usage and deter some students from abusing the system"
i do not agree, it only show´s you don´t trust your own people, we had this a while ago in germany, it happend in former ussr/china/usa/gdr.....
one last question, who is controlling you( or the responsible person) that you don´t abuse the system, and who is controlling them, and ........?

don´t get me wrong, i don´t want to attack anybody, it´s just sometimes i get angry/upset/hopeless.......

"i don´t know with what weapons we fight in the 3rd world war, but i know in the 4th we will use sticks and stones again....."

This can become a discussion on education so we must restrict. However, children are not little adults, they are children and they do not always know the rules or understand why they should be followed. 1200 students makes for a large community of 'learning future adults' and appropriate behaviour is one skill to learn (too often not taught at home). When one student abuses another via any medium then we get asked, quite rightly, what we are doing to stop this. There are two paths: prevention or punishment - I prefer to prevent an action than to punish an individual for committing the offence.

We have had one group of students using a messageboard as an online chatroom. We only found out due to the owner contacting us and it took time to get the names of all involved. We have instances of people sending very abusive emails around and we know that some people are reluctant to come up and tell us - many of them are hoping that we will find out ourselves and 'save them'. Imagine that you were being cyber-bullied; would you argue for the rights of the bully for privacy, or for the right for the owner of the system to monitor and track such action?

Oh, and any system I put in will monitor ALL users, including myself.

I don't take this as an attack and possibly this discussion should be had but this is not the forum. Email me if you wish to continue this thread - I will be very happy to hear another opinion on the matter. :)
