I have recently configured a Windows 2000 DC and put it on the same IP network as a netware domain. I have configured one PC to access the 2000 network exclusively. The remaining 8 clients all log onto the NetWare server. I want the remaining clients to be able to log onto to both. Is this achievable?

Thanks in advance

What i've done in the past for cross-platforms is to log all pc's into the 2000 domain, match the username/password on the novell server, and map shared files and folders to the novell server... Lot fewer headaches that way.

Make sure you have IPX loaded on the workstations and you may want to set the passwords on the 2000 domain to not expire...

Thanks. However currently the users access an application on the netware server. If I introduce the clients to the W2K domain will they still be able to access the application. Can you alos confirm if the below steps are correct.

IPX is already loaded
configure client to join W2K domain using existing IP address and using Network ID wizard in control panel.

After rebbot I will be able to log onto New W2K DC and still access the netware server ?

You say that you already have one machine with sole access to the 2000 server? load ipx and the "client for novell networks" and give it a whirl before you attempt to cutover all the machines.

Thanks again I will try that however it doesn't answer my question as the process is in reverse - my concern was how will joining the windows 2000 domain affct the existing services - for want of a better word

What application are you running on the server? is it a database app in which the client software is on a workstation? or is it simply a program loadable from the server (like accpac)?

The only way you're really going to know is to try it with one machine... When you load the client for netware networks and reboot, it should load and ask for a netware preferred server.

I run a number of servers in Novell and W2K DC environment. We have no problem running both together. When you logon to Novell, you are authenticating to NDS, and following that, it is Windows user\workstation authenticating to the DC. Karmic's answer about matching passwords and mapping to the Novell drives is right on target. Also when adding users, make sure they are added as users to the domain, not just to the workstation.

Robin's Rule: If you put the cover back on before you test it, it will not work.

Thanks to you both - just a couple of things.
The site in question isn't actually my organisation I am just helping out - I am form a Windows background and don't have any Netware skills. Last time a visited the site and booted one of the clients it went straight into windows without and account credentials being requested - how was Netware authenticating? To achieve what you suggest regarding using the same user name and password how can I manage this on the Netware server? I don't think any of the end users at the company know their user names and passwords.

ok, do you know what version of netware are you running? The users probably don't have passwords at all...
Doesn't sound like you're logging into any domain either so authenticating to a windows 2000 DC shouldn't be an issue.

Go to one of the machines, boot it. Once the workstation is loaded, log the user off. When you see the login screen, record the information. Press ok without a password and see if you log in with access to the novell server.

If you can get access to the novell server, create the same user without password on the 2000 dc, and log into the dc with your first machine and see if you can still gain access to the novell server.

Just to let you know - all went well at the weekend in fact it was extremely easy. I don't know much about netware authentication but it was happy enough to allow me access without authenticating so in this case I'm not complaing. thanks again for your help.
