Hello everybody,

since upgrading our backup solution from Backup Exec to Netbackup Datacenter 4.5MP6, we are experiencing many problems backing up our Netware Servers. It works fine for Unix and Windows boxes.

We have Netware 5.1 and 6.5 servers. Problems generally occur with Netware 6.5. We often get a status 41 error at the end of backups, typically when there's about 1 GB left to backup.

I would like to know if there is a simple way to help me with that issue. For now, we are using NonTarget method. I'm wondering if we should use Target method.

What's the appropriate solution to backup a Netware 6.5 server: NonTarget or Target, and why ?

Regards,

Frank

fcarra,

We are running Netware 5.1 and have had numerous problems while backing these servers up. Lots of 41, 11, and other errors prompted me to upgrade (per Veritas support) the client to a NBU 5.0 client on the netware servers.

Yes, the NBU 5.0 client for netware works fine with NBU 4.5 datacenter.

Do not change your target type.

Simply install the 5.0 client and your problems very well could go away.

Verify all of this with Veritas first, but I bet this fixes your problem.

Regards.

hpuxrules,

thanks for that answer. It seems to be a great idea. I'll verify that possibility with Veritas support. What is funny about that is we had to upgrade only OFM files to 5.0 because incrementals backups weren't working fine. I guess we just have to continue the we began.

Veritas engineer told me we should be using target mode with Netware 6.5, to be solely dependant on IP protocol. I'm really confused about that. Everybody seems to have a different opinion on that.

I hope it'll work,

Regards.

We also had many problems with NetWare 5.1 boxes. We use target mode so that we can multi-stream. However, the boxes would go to 100% utilization and we could not use OFM without the boxes crashing. The problem was finally traced to a problem with the IP portion of the netware network communication. If your are having problems with 100% CPU and communication problems on the boxes, let me know and I will try to get the info from the netware admin. jefflanders@cityofhenderson.com

Syjl,

Thanks for your answer. I don't know if we've got 100% cpu utilisation, but we often have to reboot our servers after backup is completed, 'cause server seems to freeze communications.

I have Netware 5.1 boxes and it works fine. Problem usually appears with Netware 6.5, with NonTarget mode.

Usually, backup is almost finish (69 GB out of 70 GB) when it times out.

It would be useful to have any additionnal information, so I'm gonna send you an email.

I'm also gonna try target mode, to see if it can helps.

Thanks to all,

Regards
