Netware 6.5 Too many user sessions 1

I recently migrated our 10 user netware 5.0 system to netware 6.5 with 10 user licenses. Everything was going smoothly.
I had restarted the server and was trying to install the user licenses.

I tried to load admattrs.nlm and get a 601 error after inputting the admin username and password.

So I looked for another way to load my licenses. I tried installing Imanager but it requires software we don't really want on our data server.

So I loaded NWAdmin for windows NT and it seemed to work perfectly. I installed the licenses and started checking workstations and reconnecting the groupwise clients.

Turns out I'm only able to login 3 users out a time and get a "too many sessions are already open error" when I try to log any other user in. I checked the users and removed those we do not use anymore. All of our print servicing is handled through Microsoft Print sharing so there are no printer services "logging in".

Anyone have any ideas? I'm only familiar with netware and am not an expert at all. I probably should have been to try to pull of this whole thing but like I said everything was going picture perfect.

Actually the more I think about it, it seems to me that the license install went in as the server license and did not install the user licenses...if that is the case I have no idea how I'm supposed to get the user licenses in.

Hello. First of all, I've never heard of admattrs.nlm. Where did you get that from? What is it supposed to do? (Quick google on it shows a BorderManager utility - nothing to do with Netware licensing). Never had to use that in 12 years of Netware (Not a bordermanager fan)

Second... You have to install a server license AND user licenses. Do this with NWADMIN32.EXE. It's by far the easiest. One or the other license won't be good enough. fortunately, they are delivered in the same package, so wherever you got one of the licenses, look for some other .NLF files and install those. Everything should be there in the link you got from Novell when you purchased it.

Then...you need the server to recognize the new licenses, so you need to 'refresh' the license manager... Do this:

Unload POLIMGR
UNLOAD NLSLSP

Then...

LOAD POLIMGR

That will reload the licensing manager after about 10 seconds and you should be good. You can verify it's working correctly by typing 'VERSION' at the command line. You should see your NetWare version and license info.

If you see "Server License Not Acquired", well, it isn't working. Sometimes it takes a couple minutes. It should show you the serial number and "hard stop" or "audited" somewhere in the description if it is working correctly.

Thanks for the reply. I checked and it seems that the server and 10 user licenses are installed. I can see the objects in the tree now. I have restarted the server and the workstations and still cannot login more than 2 users(attached to the grace licenses according to PM display).

Do I have to do something to attach the licenses to the users or vice versa? I tried NWconfig(how I would set it up in Novell 5) but it says it doesn't handle licenses anymore.

Also...

I feel like such a newb. All the places I think I need to login to on the server to make the adjustments give me a 601 error. I assume it's because I'm not logging in correctly with the full container admin login.

Is it [username].[srvname].[context]?

Nope, just .username.context (note the leading period). And stop rebooting that server! That's for Windows, it is unnecessary (and usually a waste of time anyway) on Netware.

Thanks. I'll give that a try and see if it works to get me in to the tools. Any insight as to why or how to get the licenses to recognize the users?

I also verified that NLS_LSP was running even though I don't see an object in the NWadmin panel...like I thought I would.

So logging in to setupnls if my context was CD would be .admin.cd then password?

I've never troubleshot a licensing issue, so I'll have to defer to Marvin, Terry, et. al., sorry. My only recommendation would be to wait an hour and try again, sometimes structural changes can take longer than you might think to fully propagate through the Tree.

Generally yes. There are some utilities that want the fully qualified name, others want just the username, but most use the dotted name format. Check the docs on that utility.

If your license provider on the server is horked, you can run SETUPNLS and that will recreate the necessary pieces. It requires a login, which should be something like ".admin.context'. If that wasn't the problem to start with, it's not going to help. It also won't reinstall your licenses for you.

It's also important to make sure you are installing the licenses that go with your version of NetWare. I saw today a customer with similar problems that were trying to install NetWare 6.0 licenses and they didn't work for NetWare 6.5, which is something to be expected.

I'm away from the server for a little bit but I'll try the setupnls when I get back. I'm pretty sure the user licenses are correct as they came right from the Novell license install disk for the software.

So I got setupnls to work and now the login error have changed.

Using netware client 4.91 sp3 I get "tree or server cannot vbe found choose a differnt tree or server."

using netware client for windows xp I get You cannot be authenticated on cd_tree due to the following reason: the network path cannot be found.

using netware client for windows xp I get You cannot be authenticated on Srv_cd due to the following reason: the network path cannot be found.

I have uploaded a few screens of the Admin program to see what you guys think. They are large and I do not even have paint on this workstation.

I did get nls_lsp_srv_cd to show up as you see.

Those pics don't look right. I'm not sure how you got what you ended up with.. However, those other errors you mention really have nothing to do with licensing.. those are completely separate issues.

At this point I recommend that you contact someone that understands this stuff. This can be resolved fairly quickly by the right person. Make sure you contact someone that specializes in this stuff, not someone that touched it 4 years ago. or you can call my office and you could work with us - or we could recommend someone in your local area.

Thanks. I'll see if I can find someone local and if not I'll contact you.

I did find that my server object (srv_cd) says it is version 5.7, which is probably my issue but I'm unsure of how to resolve it.

I am 99% sure this is a licensing issue. It seems that when I do a uninstall -reinstall of the licensing that I cannot get the user licenses in at all. I must've used licensed Metering or something to get what I got the first time.

When I try to reinstall the NLF file it tells me it already exists on the server which is true it does as the server license. But from what I can tell the same NLF holds the user licenses as well. Is there another way to install user licenses? I've tried to get imanager to work but I cannot get the apache2 web server and tomkat4 running right either.

as marv said for licence install - nwadmin actually is the easiest way - (i know i certainly still use this)
i assume at the server - when you type version is it saying audited? - this comes up immediately when you install with nwadmin?

your client issue above is due to slp

a lot of these type of things is easy when you see it but hard when thinking about it

The thing about licensing is that it is such an easy thing to setup, we provide that service for free to our customers (assuming that they buy the licenses from us).. And we have our sales guys do the installs, if that tells you anything.

I'm as baffled as all get out that you are struggling so much with that.

Marvin Huffaker, MCNE

Yeah it really does baffle me too. I have setup and maintained multiple windows networks and they seem to go together like clockwork. But of course I know the software extremely well.

Is there an upsated version of NWAdmin I can download somewhere? I'm wondering if I have an old version.

We had an, I believe unrelated, groupwise error that I need to work on now as well but I think I can fix that through NWadmin. It seems the server cannot find the home directory for the POA.

if it's anything above groupwise 5.5 then use consoel1 NOT nwadmin. the home drive is sepecisied in the .poa but configured via console1.

nwadmin is just there by default - any old crappie version will do

is your ds all in sync - no errors etc
i know that your slp is shot to sh**
