I am trying to learn Netware on my own so I can better understand the OS since we use it at my workplace. But I have had no success installing it at all. I can not get pass the DOS portion of the install. I have an old Gateway Essential PC with a PIII 850 and 512MB of memory. The installation continues to lock up in the Loading Drivers... section. Normally gets locked up on the NIC driver part. I have a Dlink DFE-530-TX as my adapter. What could cause me so many issues with this installation? I have used this same computer to install Windows 2000 server, Windows 2k3 server, SUSE Linux, Red Hat Linux, and Free BSD. But Netware won't seem to go. Any ideas?

been a long time since i used a dlink but i think that is an unsupported card
there is a unsupported directory that you can call the lan driver from
easiest way is to put a 3com in
not sure on that gateway though but certainly around the 3400 time there was a bios upgrade that solve these as well

i would go for the nic first though even just put a second one in

To help narrow down the problem, you could also get to the point where it is right before it hangs.. Have you already loaded any drivers at all?

Try loading the drivers manually -- just go to the console prompt (ALT-ESC) and they try to load the driver from there. You'll need to know the name of it and where it is located.. But if it does hang, you'll be able to know what it was doing.

BTW, which driver section does it hang on? There are a few different places that load drivers.

Yea I think the included D-Link driver is flawed. I switched out the NIC for an SMC NIC and loaded the drivers from a floppy. That seemed to solve the problem and I was able to get into the GUI Netware Installation part.

Thanks for the help!
