Is there a replacement program that will do what the Net Send or MSG command does? I am trying to find a way to send quick popup messages to all computer in my network with out the need to install software on all computers (I can install it on my windows 2003 server but do not want to have to install on all client computers)The Net Send and MSG commands just do not work

Net Send used the Messenger protocol. That protocol was very insecure and was removed from Vista and Windows 7. It was disabled by default in XP by SP2 (I think it was sp2.)

Any replacement will use a different protocol and require pushing out a client to all machines.

You might get what you need with one of the Fomine products:

If you don't have Vista machines, configure a GPO to set the startup mode for the Messenger server to automatic. Next time the workstations boot, the service will start.

I would configure GPO but I did a test between 2 machines, I enabled the messenger service on both and when I try to send a message between them it did not work

You'll have to be FAR more specific than that. I've got thousands of machines and it works fine with doing nothing more than enabling the service.

yes I am able to send the message to myself

I can send messages to myself, but when I try to send a message to another user or computer it does not work

Can you try sending to another machine using its IP address?

Thanks,
Andrew

by ip i get error "192.168.x.x does not exist or is disconnected

Can you ping this IP address? Is there a firewall between the source and destination?

Thanks,
Andrew

yes I can ping the address, no firewalls between computers, they are in the same subnet. Windows Firewall is enabled on all computers

You're probably being blocked by windows firewall. Can you try it again with the firewall off on the destination pc?

Thanks,
Andrew

i tried that just now, same error message

Just to be clear...did you enable the messenger service on both machines (ie. set them to Automatic) and also Start the service?

Thanks,
Andrew

no i only had the messenger service enabled on the destination computer. It works now when I have the messenger enabled on both computers
