I have a Netscreen 5XP and just upgraded to 4.0.3r4. Traffic over the tunnel has always been slow and causes computers to hard lock when exploring mapped drives over the VPN. It takes forever and I was hoping a firmware upgrade may solve the problem. It did not. The VPN tunnel works and so do SQL connection and Remote Admin sessions. Mapped drives on the other hand casue serious errors for my users. I just purchased the upgrade for the VPN client so I will be upgrading to 8.3 from 8.1. I have seen others complain about the same issue on this forum, but the solution has been "buy another product". Is Netscreen that bad of a product? I know their products can be difficult if not impossible to support since their "upgrades" for software are only supported for a limited time...then they want more money. However, I would like to "fix" this problem before tossing the device out.
Anyone have suggestions? The Tunnel works, I used DES and SHA authentication to lower the VPN overhead, but it sure is slow and crashes my computer and my clients computer the same exact way. We all "dail in" through our internet connections using Netscreen remote clients (now 8.1 soon to be 8.3). I asked Netscreen for the white paper on the fixes included in their 8.3 version of the remote client (Not published on their website of course) and it listed a problem "4966 - The system could not map drives to Windows NT or Windows 2000 servers on Windows XP and Windows 2000 clients using the virtual adapter" version 8.2 fix. I am not sure if this is related to my problem since I can establish map drives, only shares with large amounts of files have the problem of crashing my desktop.
