[tt]What's the first thing I should do if I want to make a site compatible with Netscape? of course it looks the way I wanted in IE.

I would appreciate your input guys as I'm very new at cross-browser compatability.

Here's my site for IE and it looks horrible with Netscape

Thanks in advance.

Hi lexus,

At present, there are no laws here requiring any form of disabled access to websites. (None that I am aware of anyway)

I know that there has been talk by the government of introducing similar laws as the US currently have but due to the fact that Tony Blair seems clueless about the internet, it might be some time before that happens.

I researched all of this a few months ago when I was redesigning my design site. Due to a few factors that would make it really difficult to allow access to the normal version, I decided to make a text only version of the site. I am still working on the finer details before that version is officially launched.

I use SSI extensively on my design site and am playing around with the possibility of including the content dynamically into both versions. This allows me to update the graphical version and have the text version automatically update as well.

Now, I have no law requiring my to do this and even if the law is introduced, it will not affect this site. The reasons that I am doing are as follows:

1) If a law is introduced, I am already compliant.
2) Expands my market audience.
3) Users looking for accessible sites are more likely to go to a design company that has an accessible site itself.
4) I do not beleive in descriminating against disabled users, they should be able to surf the net just as we do.

The text only version of my site did not take long to complete, the small tweaks took the longest. I am offering the user a way to dynamically adjust the display colours of my the graphical version, I am also now offering this to disabled users.

If anyone wants to check that page through a validator, it will pass most, if not all checks at present, remember that I am currently working on it though. If you view the "Change Text Only Settings", then you can totally customise the background colours, font colours, link colours and font weight. This is to allow a user easier access if they require a different colour scheme.

Ok, this post is getting a bit long so I will leave it at that.

Hope this helps Wullie

Folks,
I really appreciate the information. I had never given a thought to accesibility for disabled.
My son is mostly deaf and it hadn't occured to me that there would be other people that might have a problem.
I suppose blind would need some form of reading scanner to view the pages.
It has been very educational, thank you.

Oh, the forum won't let me put more than one star on each one. :-D Sorry.

Dear Dirtrocker:

Since your son is deaf, you can appreciate why all mpg's and avi's and any other movie files must be closed captioned. News tickers need to have text equivalents. Forms use a TABINDEX tag so you don't need a mouse to navigate them. Etc., Etc.

As I said, I am not disabled, nor is anyone in my family. But, I feel this is such an important issue that all should be aware of it, not just those sites that are required to be accessibile by law! **Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur.**

We have the kids's computer set up with headphones that he can use. Actually it is great when both boys use them, quieter house, beings their PC is next to mine. LOL
Hearing aides and other hearing assistance things become a normal part of life.

Closed caption, that is a very intersting thought.
I am ashamed to admit that these things never occured to me as far as the web goes. But it makes perfect sense.
Thanks.

Dirtrocker,
Not to be ashamed! Just help out by trying to make your sites accessible. It just takes a bit more work (not all that much either!) and some extra planning. You'll learn a lot as well. I sure have since I became aware (about June of 99) of the accessibility issues that were coming down the pike.

[tt]Funny how one simple questions can snowball into something so different. LOL
