I got the message "unable to log you on because the
netlogon service is not running on this machine" while
trying to log onto a windows xp professional machine to a
domain.

How do I restart the netlogon service?
I tried a couple of things like removing the network
adapter, or rejoining the domain (but that part is grayed
out so I can't rejoin it). I tried the last known good
config and that didn't work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Do Start>>Run and type services.msc

Scroll to Net Logon and see if it is "Started"

If not start it and choose Properties to set Startup type to "Automatic"

I am curious if you un-installed Norton Anti-virus software very recently, or installed Zone Alarm very recently. Or both.

Thanks for the reply. About the anti-virus and zone alarm, this is not the case. It all started happening when someone installed a 2nd nic card in the computer. For some reason (don't know why because I've done that before and my netlogon service didn't stop running) the netlogon service stopped running. Now I can't logon to the domain so I logged on as an administrator locally. But when I went to services.msc, netlogon is not listed in there. So any other ideas? Thanks.
