Hi,

I've been trying to set up VPN access to our office network, but have not been able to get it to work as yet.

I'm trying to use Windows XP's built in VPN client (SP2) to establish a VPN connection to a Netgear FVS318. The FVS318 is connected to an ADSL modem/router with a static IP address, and I've placed the FVS318 in a DMZ on the modem/router. I have previously been advised that this type of connection should be possible, but am starting to doubt whether that is in fact the case.

Does anybody know whether one has to buy and install Netgear's own VPN client software in order to establish a VPN connection to the FVS318? Or should it also be possible to use WinXP's built in client?

Anyway, I've been trying to establish a connection from my laptop using a dial-up connection and WinXP's built in VPN client. Looking at the VPN log on the router, the connection seems to get through to the router, but somewhere along the line it goes wrong. Here's a copy of the VPN log on the router:

Any tips/suggestions/walkthroughs would be greatly appreciated.

Try getting a copy of SafeNet Softremote, (there is a free version floating around out there), or just pony up the bucks to get the VPN Client software from Netgear (based on the same software as SafeNet Softremote).

I just got my FVS318v3 working but I purchased the Prosafe client software. YOu might check any firewalls on either side of the tunnel.

I got it working; however, I'm very disappointed in the throughput over the VPN. I have applications pulling from databases that are dog slow over this VPN. I'll probably take the FVS318v3 back for this reason.

Adriaan,

Is "Agressive Mode" an option on this router? If so, you might try that.

I am trying to get Prosafe VPN client to connect to a FVS318V3. I have tried everything and cannot connect to this router via the client software. Any config tips you could share? Netgear only has support doc's for the version 2 routers, nothing for the version 3, which has completely different config options. Thanks.

NewBlue: Setting up the Prosafe client is not a simple task, and as you've pointed out the support docs and user manual for the software is pretty much useless. In the end I got in contact with Netgear's UK support guys (the guys that are actually BASED in the UK). Unfortunately I've lost their phone number, but it shouldn't be too hard for you to find. They were quite helpful and offered to do the entire configuration for me. After an hour or so they had finished configuring the FVS318V3 remotely and e-mailed me a config file for the client software. I tried it and it worked first time. Therefore I'd recommend you try and get in contact with them.
