My 4000R didn't come with any documentation that discussed the use of the adapter dongle that attaches the keyboard, video and mouse to the back of the server. My question is this: what's the ethernet RJ45 port on that dongle utilized for?

Thanks

The RS-485 port (I2C) on the cable is for interconnecting the Service Processor on some IBM Netfinity/xSeries servers. The 4000R is not one of those servers. Perhaps you have the incorrect cable.

I've just pick a Netfinity 4000 myself and it didn't come with the KVM dongle and no manual, do you have a pn for the dongle.

Thanks
Gary

There are two kinds of cables for the 4000R: If you are connecting the server directly to the console switch, use p/n 09N7176 (it's a short cable - 11"); if you are connecting the server to a console cable set that connects to the console switch, use p/n 09N7179. You can get all the product documentation from IBM's site at:
Or just go to and navigate to Servers > 4000R
