Hey everyone, I recently purchased a 5000 and was considering upgrading the 350mhz PII to dual 500mhz PIII
processors. I have never done an install like this before, and have seen several references to VRM settings in my search for information. My board is set up to receive (2) slot 1's (from the factory)....can anyone tell me what I need to do in order to accomodate voltage (if anything at all)? Here are all of my specs:

Currently:
1 350mhz PII
FRU# 02K2776

UPGRADE CPU'S:
#1: 500/512/100/2.0v S1
10020057-0063 Philipines
98 SL35E
#2: 500/512/100/2.0v S1
10030052-0142 Philipines
98 SL35E

Sorry for writing such a long post!!

Thanks :)

Ok...I did some more checking and I think I answered my own question. My svr came equipped with (1) VRM, FRU#01K7113. According to IBM the same VRM will work on pIII Intel's up to 550mhz. Thus, all I need to do is acquire another module of the above make and plug it in while installing my dual processor configuration. Does this sound right? ...let me know what you think.

Thanks again!

actually, the OEM VRM is integrated for processor #1....there is an expansion slot for another (for the second processor). The part# listed for this second slot is indeed the FRU 01K7113.

Ok...i'm done now....I promise (laughing)!

OK. Assuming you have an 8659-12Y (Netfinity 5000 that shipped with the PII 350 MHz processor), you can order the following p/n for the 500MHz processors: 36L9673. If you order it via this Option p/n, it will come with the necessary VRMs. If you order the Field Replaceable Unit <FRU> (33L1615), you will also need to order the correct VRM (01K7113). For 550 MHz processors, you can order the following: 33L5112 Again, if you order it via this Option p/n, it will come with the necessary VRMs. If you order the Field Replaceable Unit <FRU> (37L5603), you will also need to order the correct VRM (01K7113)

I am a little confused...I am currently assuming that I am able to install any 500mhz processor as long as it is a slot 1, 512cache, and 100 front side bus. Is that not the case? Please advise!

Not exactly. Your Netfinity 5000 will support up to a 550MHz (Slot 1) processor with a 100MHz FSB. If using two processors, they must be identical specs. The VRM must be correct for the CPU speed. I gave you the IBM part numbers, but since the box is most likely out of warranty, as long as you remain within the same parameters, it should work.

For those that are interested, VRM FRU#01K7113 was the correct one. I installed the dual PIII's and everything works just fine! -Thanks to all who helped me along the way :)
