I have NetBackup 5.1MP4 and just recently purchased VMware ESX 3. This VMware server is only a host for virtual machines to sit on. I want to be able to backup the VMware ESX server itself. What type of client would I need and how would I install the client onto the VMware host? Would I do a disk backup, system state backup, etc? All my guest VMs will be Windows OSes so I can get that part going.

TIA.

you will need windows agents for the virtual(guest) machines
you will need to load the "Unix Clients" for the ESX server itself.

If you want to get backups of the VMDK files of the guest systems you will need to put the selected guest servers into redo mode prior to backing them up (I think esx 3 has some built-in method for this)

I currently backup the vmdk files via a script that puts the guest os's into redo and takes them out when completed.

That script sounds like a good idea as well. What does your script look like? Would you be willing to send me the script editing out your servers or what not?
Thx.

I can get with the server admin guys and see if they will part with it
I gave them the command line to start the backup
They setup the command line to put the servers into redo mode and then attached the whole batch process to a daily schedule.

Seems to have worked so far
