What are the advantages of upgrading to Netbackup 6.5?

From which version?

If you're thinking of upgrading from 5.0 or 5.1 there are loads of benefits (too many to mention).

Some of the New Features included in 6.5

Storage Lifecycle Policies
AdvancedDisk Storage option
SharedDisk Stroage option
SAN client
Netbackup Fibre Transport
VTL backup direct to tape
Netbackup Snapshot Client
Media Sharing
BMR
Puredisk Storage Option / Enterprise Edition

As well as bug fixes. Of course, the addition of the above features are likely to entail possible bugs themselves.

Is it worth upgrading from 5.1 MP4, which works.

Yes

is the upgrade from 5.1 MP4 to 6.5 complicated?
Is it worth bringing in consultant to do the upgrade, we have one hefty machine which is both master/media server. our infrustructure is complicated, and we have just completed vitualising most of our servers, and planning to migrate out samba file server to windows file server.

so we cant really afford to be without a backup systems for too long.

If you buy directly from symantec then ask the sales rep bring the systems engineer on site.

we've recieved one those notification upgrade, so it is pretty much free of charge.

What I meant was that if you have a good relationship with the Netbackup seller, then perhaps they will ask their Netbackup Engineer come to your site and assist in the install. They are not required to do this and they are unde no obligation to assist, but it makes good business sense to them to have happy, satisfied customers :)

I just completed my upgrade from 5.0mp7 to 6.5.1 and things went relatively smooth. Follow the upgrading to 6.5 documentation in the upgrade portal and you'll be fine.

Make sure to open a case after you run the nbcc to verify the catalog.

The only problem I ran into as far as the clients was our Netware clients needed upgraded from 5.0. Other than that all client communication was fine.

Also, check out the post I made today on the DSSU issue. It may be something to note if applicable.

Thanks for you post, it is good to hear you had smooth upgrade. I have checked your post on the DSSU, very helpfull. We use DSSU for exchange backups.

what is the reason behind opening a call after you run nbcc? did you upgrade straight after running the nbcc and you had to wait a day or two before you upgraded.

how did you handle client upgraded, specifically windows clients. Our Master/Master server is Unix/Solaris platform.

what would be your recommendation, what would be the best way to proceed, i have been managing Netbackup Enterprise over the last couple, but have never done upgrade before.

You can upgrade your clients later - they don't need to be done when the Master server/Media servers are upgraded.

If I recall, you cannot push the client installs to Windows from Unix, so you will have to manually do this (or use some third party software)

The upgrade documentation advises to open a call after you run nbcc to have Symantec to review the output to check for database inconsistencies. After you run nbcc which runs pretty quick it will tell you if there are database inconsistencies or not.

If you need to upgrade any Windows clients it should be pretty simple.
